The Twelve are Avatars that once ruled the continent surrounding Myste-Hass. Each Avatars is an aspect of one of the prime deities. There are two Avatars for each deity, splitting the remit of their prime gods in two.
Knowledge of these Avatars first came about when a party of adventurers found a door beneath the old Church of Alaie. On this door, there were twelve symbols representing each of the Avatars beneath the icon of their respective God.
Since this, adventurers have encountered many locations dedicated to The Twelve. On some occasions, there have discovered a throne which acts as a cradle for the Avatar. When a mortal interacts with this cradle, they are highly likely to find themselves compelled by the voice of the Avatars within. Under the power of The Twelve, the mortal is forced to sacrifice their body, their minds imprisoned at furthest reach, so that the Avatar can use their physical form as a host for their own immortal spirit.
Some of The Twelve have been encountered already within flesh, others remain trapped in their thrones and some are yet to be encountered.
